What Are the Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms?

September 1, 2010

A few years ago asbestos Cancer diseases such as Mesothelioma were virtually unknown. When hearing the word Mesothelioma most people would scratch their head and say “What the heck is that?” Today the situation is entirely different. Mesothelioma as you may already have figured out is a type of Cancer.

Generally, the Mesothelioma patient has an abundance of Cancer cells which are lining the bodies various cavities including that area which surrounds the patient’s chest or lung area as well as their heart. The common cause of this illness is the result of exposure to asbestos particles. In reality, it does not take a long exposure to the asbestos for the human body to develop Mesothelioma.

Even the small amount of exposure to asbestos particles regularly can generate the disease. On top of that if the person is a smoker their chances are greatly increasing for the person to develop the disease. During an Environmental Protection Agency survey that was conducted the 1980’s it was concluded that at least 20 percent of the buildings in America contained the Cancer causing asbestos. These buildings also including many public use structures such as schools and office buildings.

One of the immediate questions that are posed concerning Mesothelioma cancer symptoms is usually why no one had heard of the condition previously. The reason is simply that this type of cancer is relatively rare. Mesothelioma cancer cases have been continuously rising within the last 20 years. As for sex, it appears that men are likely than develop the disease more so then would women. The disease is capable of striking any man or women of any age.

In order to determine if you are at risk for this type of cancer you should investigate your background. If you have ever worked around asbestos chances are that you are a high risk for having this illness. Most cases of reported Mesothelioma have resulted in 75 percent of the patients receiving a daily exposure of some sort to the asbestos whether it is at your place of employment or elsewhere.

Often cases of Mesothelioma may be misdiagnosed since the various cancer symptoms are similar to several less serious types of diseases. These symptoms frequently include persistent cough, dyspnea or shortness of breath, weight loss, and fatigue. An additional form of Mesothelioma will often manifest itself as pain being experienced in the abdominal, loss of weight accompanied by abdominal swelling. If this cancer has spread to other portions of the body symptoms may also include difficulty in swallowing and a marked swelling around the neck and facial area.

The hardest part of understanding this disease is that most often the symptoms do not materialize until 30 to 40 years after the victim has been exposed. MRI, X-ray and CT Scans are the needed tools to confirm the diagnosis of Mesothelioma. This illness should be treated as early as is feasibly possible.

Asbestos Exposure Treatment – Treating Diseases Caused by Exposure to Asbestos

August 29, 2010

During the 1940s up to the 1980s asbestos was used in various commodities and construction materials including roofing, tiling, cement pipes, electric switchboards, home and office insulation, etc. Over time, it was noted that asbestos exposure poses certain health hazards. Asbestos fibers can accumulate in the lungs and cause scarring and inflammation. This can lead to serious health problems requiring treatment methods such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery.

People can be exposed to asbestos in their homes, communities or workplace. If products that contain asbestos are disturbed, asbestos fibers are released into the air. When breathed in, these fibers get trapped in the lungs. As more and more asbestos fibers accumulate, they cause inflammation and scarring. Prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause asbestosis, lung Cancer and mesothelioma. The people at risk are those involved in ship breaking, building renovation, and dismantling anything that contains asbestos especially when they do not follow the proper procedures.

Diseases related to asbestos exposure can take 15 to 40 years to develop. Early detection and treatment is the only way to contain the disease.

Asbestosis Treatment

Asbestosis is caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers over prolonged periods of time. It is a chronic lung disease that takes around 15 to 20 years for symptoms to appear. Symptoms of asbestosis may include shortness of breath, constant dry cough, difficulty in breathing, pain in the chest, excess phlegm and pulmonary hypertension. Persons with asbestosis are more prone to pneumonia and bronchitis.

At present, there is no cure for asbestosis. Treatments are available to manage the symptoms but not the disease. It is important, though, to stop exposure to asbestos fibers as well as to dust, smoke and other irritants. Persons suffering from this disease must be regularly vaccinated against flu and pneumonia. Any respiratory infection can easily lead to serious complications.

Lung Cancer Treatment

Long term exposure to asbestos can cause lung Cancer. The symptoms include dry and irritating cough, chest pain, increase in sputum production, blood mixed with sputum and lung infection.

Treatment for lung Cancer depends on the location and size of the tumor, and how much the cancer has spread. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be used to kill cancer cells. Another treatment option is surgery where a part of the lung or an entire lung may be removed.

Mesothelioma Treatment

Mesothelioma is a rare and fatal form of lung cancer. It affects the pleura or lung lining. It can take 30 to 40 years to develop. Some of the symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, constant pain in the chest, unexplained weight loss and unexplained sudden abdominal swelling and pain.

It has the same treatment as that for lung cancer, namely radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery.

If you have been exposed to asbestos in the past, it is advisable to have yourself diagnosed by a surgeon who specializes in asbestos exposure cases. Early detection is your best protection against diseases caused by asbestos exposure. With an early diagnosis and asbestos exposure treatment, you can increase your chances of containing the disease.
